Peacock dance (Tari Merak) a new dance creations of Pasundan land, Indonesia created by Raden Tjetjep Somantri in the 1950s and is regenerated by dra. Irawati Durban in 1965. Peacock dance movement is agile and graceful, as gestures that show off the charm of the beauty of peacock feathers on the wings and tail as in the story where the male peacock peahen is tempting.
Music played is “macan ucul” with the strains of music accompaniment depicting happiness. Appreciation in this dance must be performed with great joy and happiness should the peacock for the beauty of the peacock still dazzle the audience is watching.
Costumes in these peacock dance is very luxurious and full of beautiful sparkling with the characteristic peacock shawl like wings that can be played by the dancers in bringing the Peacock dance, also cover the full body with luster decoration resembles a peacock. Head dancers use “siger” resembling a peacock's head must be full with luster decoration on these siger.
Peacock dance is usually presented to dance to welcome the guests of honor as well as dances for weddings in welcome or entertain the bride and groom. Peacock is a beautiful dance costumes and movements were already able to bring this dance to the international level. As the owner of this culture, should the people of Indonesia themselves can continue to preserve and enhance the appearance of traditional dance in Indonesia alone, especially, by the insertion of even a major appearance in events. This is done as an expression of our love and care about their own culture, which could be interpreted as a manifestation of love themselves.
